Evangelos (Vaggelis) Vrettos is a Research Scientist with the Grid Integration Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), where he joined in February 2018. He received the Dipl.-Ing degree with honors in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece, in 2010, with a focus on Power Systems. After his graduation, he worked as a research assistant at the Electric Machines and Power Electronics Laboratory of NTUA. In 2011, Evangelos joined the Power Systems Laboratory of ETH Zurich, where he obtained the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology in 2016, and continued as a postdoctoral researcher for half a year. His Ph.D. thesis on demand response for provision of power system ancillary services was awarded the Silver Medal of ETH Zurich. In 2015, he was visiting researcher for five months at the Energy and Resources Group of the University of California, Berkeley and at the Grid Integration Group of LBNL. Before joining LBNL, Evangelos was an engineer at the Smart Grid Laboratory of the Swiss electric utility EKZ, where he worked on control of loads and batteries to maximize self-consumption of PV energy in buildings. Besides demand response and energy storage, his current research interests include optimal power flow in distribution grids and control of power grids with low rotational inertia.
